Registering for the GRE General Test

By the time you are ready to register for the General Graduate Record Examination Test otherwise known as the GRE General test, you have taken plenty of tests in the past and have been evaluated in many different ways. The GRE test is designed to evaluate your ability to take graduate level courses. So, you wouldn't be sitting for it unless you are considering enrolling in a graduate school program. Since you most likely took some sort of standardized test to get into your undergraduate program, we can assume you are familiar with test taking procedures and you have registered for aptitude tests on more than one occasion. What we’re concerned with in this article is how to register for the GRE test and how to make the most of it so that you are off to a good start in your graduate level work.

Registering for the GRE General test online is easy and takes only a few minutes when you visit the Educational Testing Service or ETS homepage at ets.org. Select GRE in the list of tests to take and you’ll find a “Register for the Test” link. At this point, you’ll have plenty of registration options.

Depending on where you live in the world, you can either take a computer-based test or a paper-based test. Throughout the United States, Canada and other parts of the world, computer-based tests are offered all year round at most locations. But, you should register as soon as you can because seats fill up fast. If you live in a location where you must take a paper-based GRE test, it is only offered two times a year and you’ll really need to register well in advance.

If you can’t register online, you can register over the phone or by downloading the Authorization Voucher Request Form and sending it to the ETS address in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania listed on the form itself. However, if you have a disability that requires you to request additional assistance during the test, fill out the form and send it to the listed Princeton, New Jersey address. Insure that you have all the necessary forms prior to mailing.

One very important matter is the fact that you must spell your name on your registration the same as it is spelled on the identification you will be taking with you to get into the exam. Spelling errors can happen, so make sure that you have your name spelled correctly. Plus, most people don’t think about this trivial matter when they register, but make sure that you don’t use your nickname or your short name. If your name is Anthony on your identification, it’s best that you put Anthony rather than Tony on your registration.

When you pay your registration fee, you are entitled to have your test scores sent to as many as four graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors. But, you don’t have to know those institutions at the time you register. If you don’t know where you want your test scores sent at the time you register, you can indicate those institutions at the time you take the test.

If you don’t know where you want to attend, let the GRE Search Service match you with graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors. You will be given a chance to register for it free on the day of your computer-based test or the day you register for your paper-based test. It’s a great service to use because it utilizes your personal information, educational background and educational objective to find the institutions that best match your needs.

Finally, make sure that you take advantage of the ETS Personal Potential Index so that graduate institutions and fellowship sponsors can get a more accurate picture of your academic success. You can now provide information from multiple evaluators about your knowledge and creativity, communication skills, teamwork, resilience, planning and organization, and ethics and integrity. Rather than merely evaluating your potential on grounds of test scores, undergraduate grades and letters of recommendations, institutions can have a chance to see what evaluators have to say about you and your academic progress. It could make the difference between an institution passing on you and accepting you because of the academic qualities that aren’t evident in scores and grades.

Registering for the GRE test is a major step in your academic progress. It demonstrates your intentions to further your studies on the graduate level. So, make sure you make the most of the GRE test and utilize all the features that it has available for you. That’s the only way to make sure you get off to a great start in the perfect institution that suits you best.
